Bluefish Need Our Input

You have until March 17 to submit comments

We let everyone know about the changes on the horizon for bluefish earlier in the winter. Bluefish are overfished. This status triggered management actions. We are currently in the first stages of bringing them back.

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council is holding scoping hearings for bluefish management options. In fact, there is a webinar as well as an in person meeting tonight in Massachusetts. There was an error in the first communication. Here’s the updated info. Even if you aren’t from Massachusetts, it is the same presentation that is given in each state and worth the time to listen in.

We aren’t going to sugar coat it (We never do). We didn’t do a great job getting word out about the scoping meetings for bluefish management. Attendance at these hearings from the conservation community has been a little embarrassing. We own that issue and we regret not pushing it more.

Here’s a quick video explaining this part of the process.

ASGA has some big…and I mean big announcements coming out in the next few weeks. That isn’t an excuse for not handling the bluefish scoping process better. It is just a fact that when you have a few people working hard on a bunch of things, this stuff happens.

If you have the time, listen in on the webinar tonight.

We know that you feel that your voice wasn’t heard with striped bass. We know that many of you feel that the process is a waste of time. It is hard for us to ask you to send more emails. But, we are going to anyway. Don’t lose faith. Be a part of the solution.

We have until March 17 to submit comments for bluefish. ASGA is currently writing our comments and will share them in the next few days. At that point, we will ask you to send your comments in and provide instructions for the process.

  1. Bluefish Need to be better managed, as a great sport fish to catch other then striped bass since their numbers are on the down slide it gives anglers an option to catch some fish if the Bass aren’t biting. They can Save a fishing trip!

  2. There is no doubt bluefish population is decreasing. It was very noticeable last year. Bluefish are definitely overfished, especially on party boats, everyone keeping 10 fish. No need to keep that many fish. Bring the limit down to 3 fish per person!
